Bad Training, Good Times!

So this last week my training went to shit.  I took Wednesday off because I needed to pack and get on the road to Omaha Nebraska.  Omaha was the site of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and I had tickets to all 6 sessions.  I had glorious plans of getting a run in 2 of the 3 days I was gone, this did not happen.

Wednesday was St. Patrick's day and this lead to me being up too late, and too hungover on Thursday to get up and get a workout in before the first session of the tournament.  The first session went really well with Iowa advancing 9 wrestlers to the 2nd round of the championship bracket and one wrestler still alive in the consolation bracket.

There was a session scheduled for each morning and evening on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Our original plan was to workout in the morning go to the session, drive back to our crash pad, hang out and drive back for the evening session.  We soon learned that the sessions were longer than expected, and the drive back wasn't worth it so we spent Friday and Saturday killing time in the old market district.  Friday we spent that time eating and Saturday we got a workout in at the YMCA and a nice meal at Old Chicago.  I got no biking in, no swimming in, and only 1 run.  On top of that we didn't get home until 2:30AM on Sunday and so I missed my Sunday workout as well.

On top of all these missed workouts I ate like a PIG over the 3 days and despite all of these things I somehow managed to lose 2 pounds.  So my training starts anew tonight.  I have a chiro appointment this afternoon to straighten out the damage from 10 hours in the car, crammed into an arena seat for 24 hours total, plus my normal wear and tear from training, oh and sleeping on a couch for 2 nights.  After that its back to the grind: Lifting, Abs, Stretching.

The good news is, Tuesday is supposed to bring 60 degree weather, and that means I get to ride my "new" Trek bike OUTSIDE!!!!   More wrestling details in my next blog post.

Triathlon Update

Well I finished my first week in the new training regiment and I think I'm going to like this 8 weeks.  I only need to get up early 1 day a week instead of 3.  The workouts are more spaced out, and my performance is definitely improving.  I ran 5 miles on Sunday in 36 minutes(7:12 miles!)

I have a really light week this week, I'm taking Wed and Saturday off due to travel to and from the NCAA wrestling championships in Omaha, NE.  The Hawkeyes are the favorites to win the tournament, I hope its a good week.

Had a great weekend that just passed, got in 2 fantasy baseball drafts, and got to hang out with a high school buddy that I hadn't seen in 3 years.  Ate a LOT of really good food, got have some really good beer, and topped it all off Sunday night by smoking cubans on my deck.

Tonight is my 3rd T15 swim and I'm shooting for 1000yd.  That's a really lofty goal and a more reasonable expectation is 850yd but you have to push yourself.  I've gotten myself registered for the triathlon, mooonlight chase and river run along with Ragbrai so the competition season is picking up quickly.

The other big news is my new bike!   Shawn is buying a new bike today and I'm buying his bike, so next week when I start riding again, I'll have a 3 crank in the front and some higher quality components.  The next big step will be getting fitted to the new bike.

Well I hope you all have a great week, and GO HAWKS

Triathlon Stage 2

Well I'm through the initiation phase of the Triathlon training and I'm definitely seeing improvements already.  Yesterday I ran at about 8.5mph or faster, topping out at 10mph.  My swimming seems improved as well, I do another T15 a week from today.  The number of workouts increases for the next 8 weeks, but they are more spread out.

The first 4 weeks some of the days felt like boom or bust days.  Tuesdays were loaded and wed/fri was virtually nothing.  That has kind of evened out for this next stretch.  Plus the weather is getting nicer which means no more running on a treadmill or riding on trainer.  That will make all of this much easier to be motivated to do.

My busy stretch also starts now.  I've got 3 upcoming fantasy baseball drafts, a trip to Omaha to watch the NCAA wrestling championships.  Followed by Easter weekend and a trip to Milwaukee.  The trip to Milwaukee is going to be good and bad, I'm going to need to pack stuff to run, bike, and swim since we'll be up there from Thursday through Sunday, but it will be nice to run and bike on different routes.

Tune in to see how the first week in the new schedule goes, and how next weeks T15 ends up, I'm shooting for 950.
